In Sofala Province, specifically in Nhamatanda District, an operation carried out in collaboration with local authorities led to the arrest of two individuals on the EN6 public road. The suspects were found in possession of a plastic-wrapped package containing four lion teeth and ten claws. When questioned, they claimed that the items had been given to them by a local resident from Muanza District who had passed away two months earlier. According to the suspects, the deceased individual had found a dead lion on his farm and had given the parts to the second suspect with the intention of selling them for traditional healing practices.

In addition to the confiscated lion parts, authorities also seized a motorcycle and three mobile phones during the operation.

The illegal trade of lion body parts poses a significant threat to wildlife conservation efforts, as it contributes to the decline of lion populations in the region. Lions play a crucial role in the ecosystem, helping to maintain balance as apex predators. Protecting these iconic animals from exploitation is essential to preserving biodiversity and ensuring the health of natural habitats.
