Suspect Caught Transporting Ivory in Maputo

On April 11, 2025, authorities arrested a suspect along the Maputo Circular Road, in the T3 neighborhood under the jurisdiction of the Municipality of Matola.

At the time of his arrest, the suspect was traveling in a private passenger taxi service vehicle, transporting three pieces of ivory with an estimated total weight of 15 kilograms.

Investigations revealed that the individual works as a car salesman. During questioning, the suspect stated that he had received the ivory trophies from a citizen of Burkinabè nationality, whom he reportedly met while working in a park in South Africa.

This case highlights the ongoing challenges in controlling the illegal movement of wildlife products across national and international borders. Authorities continue to investigate the origins of the seized ivory and the full extent of the suspect’s network.
