Three Arrested in Tete Province for Pangolin Scale Trafficking Attempt

Authorities have arrested three individuals in Marávia District, Tete Province, in connection with the illegal possession and attempted cross-border trafficking of pangolin scales.

The operation followed intelligence indicating a potential trafficking case involving a Mozambican national allegedly preparing to transport pangolin scales into Zambia. Although the initial information did not specify the quantity involved, field teams were immediately mobilised to verify the report and monitor the situation.

Operational follow-up led to the interception and arrest of three suspects - two Mozambican nationals and one Zambian national - in Marávia District. The individuals were found in possession of ten pangolin scales at the time of their arrest, as they prepared to travel towards the Zambian border.

During questioning, the suspects claimed to have acquired the scales from a traditional healer. However, this statement is inconsistent with known trafficking patterns. Evidence suggests that pangolin scales are being moved across the border into Zambia, where they are sold to unidentified buyers linked to international demand.

The suspects also indicated that the final recipient of the scales would be a Zambian national, who remains unidentified, and who would facilitate payment upon delivery.

All three individuals are currently being held at Malowera Police Post and are expected to be transferred to Marávia District headquarters for further legal processing.

This case underscores the persistent threat of cross-border wildlife trafficking and the role of coordinated enforcement efforts in disrupting the illegal trade of protected species such as pangolins.
