Authorities have arrested two individuals in Gorongosa District, Sofala Province, following an operation targeting the illegal trafficking of protected wildlife species.

The operation was initiated after information indicated that unidentified individuals were in possession of a pangolin and were actively seeking potential buyers within Gorongosa District. Acting on this intelligence, authorities carried out a public road inspection operation aimed at verifying the information and disrupting the suspected illegal activity.

During the operation, two individuals were apprehended in possession of a live pangolin. The suspects were arrested in action and subsequently admitted that the animal had been illegally captured in the Chionde area, located within Gorongosa National Park, a protected conservation area.

Following the seizure, the pangolin was transferred to Gorongosa National Park, where it was placed under the care of wildlife specialists for rehabilitation. Once its condition has been fully assessed and it is deemed fit for release, the animal will be returned to its natural habitat.
