Live Pangolin Seized in Nipepe, Niassa Province

Two suspects were arrested during an operation in Nipepe District, Niassa Province, after being found in possession of a live pangolin allegedly intended for sale.

According to statements given by the suspects, they had participated in capturing the animal in the Marrupa region before transporting it to Nipepe, where they were seeking a potential buyer.

The suspects reportedly identified the capture site as being within Niassa National Reserve. This claim remains unverified. Further investigation is needed to establish the precise location and circumstances of the capture, as well as the possible involvement of other individuals in the animal’s capture, transport and attempted sale.

The operation resulted in the seizure of the live pangolin, preventing its alleged sale into the illegal wildlife trade. Follow-up investigations should examine possible links to intermediaries or buyers and determine whether the suspects were operating as part of a wider trafficking network.

Coordination with the relevant authorities will also be needed to ensure the pangolin is safely housed and receives a health assessment and any necessary care. Decisions about its rehabilitation and subsequent placement or release should be guided by its condition and conservation requirements.
