In mid-May, a targeted enforcement operation was conducted in Metarica District, Niassa Province, as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal wildlife trafficking and the exploitation of protected species.

During the operation, two individuals were apprehended in the act flagrante, in possession of two pangolins. The suspects were unable to provide any legal documentation or justification for the capture and possession of the animals. Preliminary questioning conducted at the scene confirmed that both individuals had entered a conservation area through the Marrupa region with the specific intent of hunting pangolins for illegal trade.

According to statements provided by the suspects, the animals were intended for sale on the black market at significantly high prices, reflecting the sustained demand that continues to drive trafficking of this species.

Pangolins are among the most trafficked mammals globally. Their capture, possession, and attempted commercialization constitute a serious environmental crime under Mozambican legislation on biodiversity protection, as well as under international agreements such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

This arrest represents an important step in ongoing national efforts to disrupt illegal wildlife trade, a practice that continues to pose a significant threat to biodiversity conservation in Mozambique.

The case will now proceed through the appropriate legal channels to ensure accountability of those involved and to reinforce deterrence measures against poaching and the illegal trade of protected species.
